Your competitors' active listings show what they hope to get. Their sold listings show what buyers actually paid. eBay has a free tool that shows exactly that: Terapeak Product Research in Seller Hub. In 15 minutes you can see who sells your product best, at what price, with what shipping, and what to change in your own listing.
| Where | Seller Hub → Research → Product research |
| Cost | Free for Seller Hub sellers since April 2021 (eBay) |
| Data | Up to 3 years of eBay sales (eBay's Product Research guide) |
| Extra | Sourcing Insights, a tab for choosing what to sell, needs an eBay Store subscription |
Search a product, and Terapeak shows its sales on eBay for the period you pick:
| You see | What it tells you about competitors |
|---|---|
| Average sold price and price range | Where the market really is, not where sellers list |
| Average shipping cost | Whether buyers expect free shipping |
| Total sold and number of sellers | How big the demand is and how many share it |
| Sell-through rate (last 90 days) | How fast the item sells compared with how many are listed |
| The list of sold listings | Who sells most: their titles, photos, price, format |
It also shows the real price when a Best Offer was accepted, so you see what buyers paid, not the asking price. You can filter by condition, format, location, price and codes like MPN, UPC, EPID, EAN or ISBN (eBay's Product Research help page).
Example: you sell a made-up used wireless microphone kit.
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Your price is well above the average sold price | Lower it, or add Best Offer with a floor you can live with |
| Top sellers offer free shipping | Build shipping into the price |
| Their titles use words yours doesn't ("2 transmitters", "with case") | Add those words to your title |
| They have 10+ photos, you have 4 | Add photos: the kit, every part, the case |
| Sell-through is low and sellers are many | Don't buy more stock of this item |
| The item sells fast but few sellers list it | A chance: list it, or stock more |
Example, the made-up mic kit. Terapeak shows an average sold price of $84 with free shipping; you list at $89 + $12 shipping. The three top sellers have "2 transmitters, receiver, case" in the title and 10–12 photos. Your actions: price $86 with free shipping, the same words in the title, more photos. Then compare your sales in the next 30 days with the 30 before.
Check the money too: eBay's fees are often quoted at around 13.6% plus a fixed per-order fee (Shopify's guide to making money on eBay), but they depend on the category. More on this: landed cost, revenue and profit.
Search the product on eBay and turn on the "Sold items" filter: you see recent sales, without the totals. eBay's search tips list the other filters. Step-by-step help: how to check eBay sold prices. On a phone the filter can be harder to find, as Alibaba's guide to viewing sold items on eBay notes. For ideas on what to research in the first place, see tools to find profitable eBay products.
Terapeak has no API, so no tool can pull its data automatically. But you don't need one:
Example request: "Here are Terapeak screenshots for my microphone kits. Compare them with my eBay sales for the last 90 days and give me 5 actions, starting with the one that brings the most money."
