How to Sell on Walmart Marketplace: From Approval to First Sale

Cover: how to sell on Walmart Marketplace

Walmart is not an open marketplace where anyone signs up and lists. You apply, Walmart approves your business, and only then you list. Before you start, check four things: documents, product barcodes, how you'll ship and handle returns, and what's left after the referral fee.

1. Prepare before you apply

Walmart lists these minimum requirements, as Walmart Marketplace sets out in its seller requirements:

  • Business tax ID or business license number. A Social Security number is not accepted.
  • Documents proving your business name and address.
  • A track record of selling on marketplaces or online.
  • GTIN/UPC barcodes from a GS1 company prefix.
  • A catalog that follows Walmart's Prohibited Products Policy.
  • Shipping through WFS or a US warehouse that handles returns.
  • An account with a compatible payment processor.

Shipping yourself? Look at packaging options for online retailers early: packing and returns drive your cost and delivery speed.

2. List products the way Walmart wants

Example, a made-up product:

  • Before: "Water Bottle Blue"
  • After: "Harbor Lane 32 oz Insulated Water Bottle, Stainless Steel, Blue", with the right category, attributes, GTIN and shipping weight.

Check every listing for:

  • Data: category, variants, attributes and real weight.
  • Images: at least two, sharp, on a pure white background. No logos, watermarks, extra text or accessories that aren't included (Walmart's item setup and content policies).

3. Ship it yourself or use WFS

WFS isn't automatically safer: it can make cheap or often-returned products unprofitable. Dropshipping? A supplier's delay becomes your late delivery. Walk through your steps with this order fulfillment process guide. Coming from Amazon, the habit is the same as with FBA: count every fee per product, as in ScanFlip AI's FBA fee calculator guide.

4. Price after the referral fee

Walmart takes a referral fee from every sale: 6% to 15%, depending on the category and the price (Walmart's referral fee schedule). It's counted on the total sales price, which includes shipping, handling and gift wrap (Walmart pricing).

That matters near a price step. Apparel is charged 5% up to $15, 10% from $15 to $20, and 15% above $20.

Example, a made-up T-shirt:

Free shippingShipping charged
Price + shipping paid by buyer$18.00$22.99
Referral fee10% = −$1.8015% = −$3.45

The $4.99 shipping charge moved the shirt into the 15% tier. After that, subtract the product cost, your real shipping, returns and ads. Set a minimum price per product. More on this: landed cost, revenue, and profit.

Rule: free to join doesn't mean cheap to sell. Price from what's left, not from what the product cost.

5. Keep your account healthy

Walmart tracks cancellations, on-time delivery, valid tracking, response to buyers, returns, items not received and negative feedback. As a working target, use the Pro Seller levels from the Pro Seller requirements:

  • on-time delivery 95% or more;
  • cancellations 1.5% or less;
  • seller responsiveness 95% or more.

Pro sellers also get referral fee discounts on qualified listings.

Check Seller Center weekly: impressions, clicks, conversion, cancellations, delivery and profit. If delivery or cancellations slip, pause ads first. Ads won't fix shipping, they send more orders into the problem.

How SellerAI helps

SellerClaw connects to your Walmart store and works with your real data, inside Claude or ChatGPT or as an agent in the SellerClaw app and Telegram. Ask it to:

  • check listings for missing attributes and weak titles;
  • rewrite titles, bullets and descriptions for your approval;
  • compare your prices with competitors and flag low stock;
  • send a weekly report on sales and account health.

Example request: "Check my five Walmart listings for missing item specifics and suggest new titles. Don't change anything without my OK."

Good listings and reliable shipping help buyers find and trust you. They can't fix a missing barcode, a prohibited product or a margin that ads eat. Note your numbers for the last 30 days, change one thing, and compare the next 30.
