Shopify already has a recovery email built in. Turn it on, then check that its link really brings the shopper back to the same cart. A coupon for everyone is not the answer: some people forgot, others left because of shipping costs, trust or payment, and each needs a different fix.
| Where | Shopify admin → Apps → Messaging → Automations |
| Who gets it | Online Store and Buy Button checkouts, by default only customers subscribed to email marketing |
| Counts as abandoned | Email entered, checkout not finished for more than 10 minutes |
| Measure | Recovered orders and profit after discounts, not opens |
The built-in automation covers Online Store and Buy Button checkouts, not Shopify POS, Shop or other channels. By default it emails only customers subscribed to email marketing (Shopify's recovery automation guide). Marketplace orders don't count here.
Leave discounts off during the first test. Otherwise a broken link and a weak offer look the same, and you can't tell which one failed.
Running several apps at once? Make sure only one sends reminders. See what to automate first in a Shopify store.
A starting schedule to test, not a proven rule:
| Reminder | When | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| First | About an hour after | A plain reminder with the cart link |
| Second | About a day later | Shipping, delivery, returns and payment options |
| Last | About three days later | An optional incentive for eligible shoppers |

Before you add a discount code, set an expiry date, single use, a minimum spend, product exclusions and the lowest margin you'll accept. Check that it doesn't stack with other promotions. Keep the discount out of the subject line: shoppers shouldn't learn that leaving checkout earns a better price. And stop every reminder the moment someone buys.
Example, made-up store: a magnetic cable organizer three-pack for $19 plus a $12 accessory, $31 in the cart. Free shipping over $35, returns within 30 days.
The second version names the product, gives a reason to come back, explains the cost and has one button. For an SMS to opted-in shoppers, keep it to the same three facts and the recovery link. Never invent scarcity or promise stock is reserved if it isn't.
Recovery rate = recovered carts ÷ abandoned carts × 100. Shopify's own example: 500 abandoned carts and 40 recovered orders give 8% (abandoned checkouts documentation).
| Metric | Where | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Recovery rate | Your calculation | Share of carts that became orders |
| Opens | Automation report | A rough signal; mail apps inflate it |
| Clicks | Automation report | Interest, not payment |
| Recovered sales | Shopify reports | Revenue and order size |
| Profit after discounts | Your sheet | Whether recovery made money |
The honest test: hold back reminders from a random part of eligible shoppers and compare order rate and profit between the two groups over the same period. Some of those people would have bought anyway. Change one thing at a time. Klaviyo or Omnisend add flow reports and SMS if you outgrow Shopify's built-in reports.
Emails only reach shoppers who left an email address. Many leave because something in checkout put them off. Baymard's checkout research lists the main reasons U.S. shoppers gave, not counting those who were just browsing:
| Reason | Shoppers | First fix to test |
|---|---|---|
| Extra shipping, taxes or fees | 48% | Show estimates on product and cart pages |
| Forced account creation | 24% | Offer guest checkout |
| Delivery too slow | 22% | Show delivery dates before checkout |
| Didn't trust the site with card details | 18% | Show payment options and real security signs |
| Couldn't see the total upfront | 16% | Show the total earlier |
